USB port

my USB port are not picking up my webcam and my external HD, seem 64 studio dont support the port. when having the webcam plugged in, on starup light comes ont the cam , but when coming to 64 studio, no light, how do I activate me USB ports

What does dmesg say?

First, I don't understand: When do you get the light? With 64studio? With Fedora? With Windows? Always? Never? What's the model of your camera? What's the model of your external HD?

When you plug in a USB device, there will be kernel messages written to a log file. You can see those messages using the 'dmesg' command (from a terminal window). We need to see them to troubleshoot your issue.

So......

1. Unplug your device.
2. Wait about 60 seconds.
3. Plug your device back in.
4. wait about 20 seconds. You'll probably see the hard
disk accessed once. The camera/HD might do something.
5. Enter this command in a terminal window:

dmesg | tail -n 20

6. Come back here and post the output of that command
along with the make and model. Do this for each
device.

HTH.

some other commands with useful output

If you plug in the hard disk, can you post the result of entering this in a terminal:

ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/usb*

This should show that it is found and how it is known.

with this command ls -l

with this command ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/usb*
i get
ls: /dev/disk/by-id/usb*: No such file or directory

Im running Ubuntu Studio on another PC where both the cam Creative and external HD Medion HHDrive2go USB 2.0 compatible to USB 1.1, is working on that distro

strange

I find it strange that the ls... doesn't work with you, I get a listing of my cardreader when it is connected.

Anyway, the first listing with the camera means it is detected but the camera itself is not supported. I can't get anything from the HD case.

Is there another messenger like kopete who support webcam

That dmesg didn't look right.

Hi pandora,

That dmesg didn't look right. That's what it looks like when you plug in a hard drive or a memory stick... not for a camera.

Sorry if I'm dense... but I don't understand your webcam setup. Which webcam works on what systems... and which one are you trying to fix? It would seem to be:

Creative Cam -- Works on Ubuntu, haven't tried on 64studio.
Unknown Cam -- Haven't tried on Ubuntu, doesn't work on 64studio.

Is this what we have?

Thanks,
Gabriel

Webcam sensor chip and Hard drive power...

WEBCAM
======

So, the webcam is a Creative Webcam Instant Model # PD620/VF0040 ?? The driver for the camera appeared to work fine... but it complained about a "sensor." (Whatever that is.) On this site they said that you need pas106 for your sensor. (Whatever that is... maybe a chip.) But you might have a different chip.

What does dmesg look like when you plug it in to your Ubuntu Studio?

FYI: Creative's list

THE HARD DRIVE
==============

For the hard drive: is it USB powered? That's what it looks like when a hard drive doesn't have enough power. On some PC's, the USB power supply is enough. On some, you have to run 2 USB cables to the hard drive (one for USB, and one is solely for power). Alternatively, you might need an external power source for the drive. Whether you need the "power boost" or not depends on the PC... not the hard drive.

[Edit - added word "enough" to 2nd sentance. 7/4/05 11:50 CDT]

Creative Cam works on Kopete In Ubuntu Studio
but dont work on Kopete in 64 Studio
64 Studio seems not to reconize the Creative Cam
Unknown Cam -- Dosent work on Ubuntu Studio, doesn't work on 64studio.
My HD gave external power source and is also not reconized in 64 Studio
but works perfect on Ubuntu Studio

Need more info

Hi pandora,

Creative Cam
============

I still would like to see a dmesg of this one on Ubuntu. When you did this before, the dmesg was for a hard drive... not a webcam.

Unknown Cam
===========

A dmesg of this one on either machine will do so that we can see the vendor id and device id. Chances are, there's no drivers for this one... but with those two numbers we can look it up.

Hard Drive
==========

How did you give the hard drive an external power source? Wall plug? Other USB port? If USB ports: On the front of the PC, on the back of the PC, on the keyboard? What does the hard drive physically do when you plug it in to 64 Studio? Does it have lights that flash a little and then stop... or do they constantly flash? Do you hear the drive constantly click?

HTH,
Gabriel

Hardware?

Does anything work on this USB port? Maybe the problem is the port... or even the USB controller on the MoBo.

Also, are you not going to answer any of the other questions? If not, there's not much more I can do to help.

Ive answered all of them
and sorry if im wrong never had this issues on other distros
to cut this short
everything works on Ubuntu Studio cam and external HD powered from from wallplug
nothing works on this distro 64 Studio

Unkind?

Hmmm... I've spent a few hours trying to help you with your problem... for no other reason than trying to help you. And while I've been to the point on technical issues, I haven't been unkind at all. In fact the last comment was simply to let you know what I was doing (in case you were waiting on me) rather than to silently leave without saying anything (which would be cowardly of me). I'm sorry that I seemed rude.

If you want to give up on trying to make this work, that's OK with me, too. I'm just trying to help... so don't feel like you're answering questions just to please me. I've had many technical issues in linux where I've had to give up and call it a day... so I fully understand.

The dmesg that you posted (I assume for the Creative Webcam) shows that the 'No supported image sensors detected' is not the issue with the webcam. Rather, the issue seems to be that you're not getting a 'usbcore: registered new interface driver zc0301' message after it... or possibly with Kopete.

...So, at this point I don't know where to go or what to look for. Sorry. I hope you can get it working.
