Upgrading 64 Studio

Once 64 Studio is installed, you shouldn't have to re-install each time a new release is made. Here's how to upgrade...

Upgrade to the stable branch

If you want to stick to the latest stable release of 64 Studio, just follow these steps:

1. If you have a previous version of 64 Studio installed, please make sure your repository (in the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/64studio.list ) has been updated to the UK mirror:

deb http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/64studio.com/apt/ 64studio main

(This mirror is also available by FTP):

deb ftp://ftp.mirrorservice.org/sites/64studio.com/apt/ 64studio main

or the US mirror:

deb http://download.linuxaudio.org/64studio/apt/ 64studio main

If not, you will need to edit the file (as root).

2. Before performing the next step you should comment out any third-party repositories you have previously enabled which are not compatible with Debian/etch (for example, Debian/testing or Debian/unstable). Of course it is fine to leave Debian/etch itself.

3. Run this command in a terminal, as root:

64studio-upgrade

Your apt database should be updated, existing packages upgraded and new packages installed. If a new kernel has been installed, you will need to reboot in order to use it.

Alternatively, if you prefer a GUI for software updates, you can add one of these APT URL's to Synaptic's Repositories window using the Custom button. Then click 'Reload' followed by 'Mark all upgrades' and 'Apply'.

Upgrade to the testing branch

If you would like to help with testing forthcoming releases, please make sure that you've got the latest packages. This is what you should do, as root:

1. Uncomment the following line in your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/64studio.list file:

deb http://apt.64studio.com/64studio/testing 64studio main

2. Run:

64studio-upgrade

3. Optionally, run:

tasksel --new-install

to reset packages to their default state.

4. If a new kernel package has been installed, reboot the machine so that the newest kernel can run.

Debian package compatibility

The 64 Studio 2.x releases are compatible with Debian/etch. Please note that if you are following the 64 Studio testing branch and require additional packages from Debian, you should be using a Debian/etch source for these. The 64 Studio testing branch is currently based on Debian/etch plus backports, rather than Debian/lenny.

ethernet configure for download upgrade..

I do not succeed to use sinaptic because I have proxy a firewall, with ubuntu 7,04 I succeed, why with 64studio I do not succeed...

Firewall ports

In Synaptic, on the Settings menu, go to Preferences and click the Network tab. You can enter your proxy server configuration there, including the port number and username/password (if your proxy server requires authentication).

When lenny becomes the new stable core of Debian, will 64Studio be compatible with it as it is with Etch currently?

Repositories

Hi. Sorry for my bad english.
If i understood well, the following lines in my /etc/apt/sources.list

### 64studio stable
deb http://apt.64studio.com/64studio/stable 64studio main
#deb-src http://apt.64studio.com/64studio/stable 64studio main

should be replaced by

### 64studio stable
deb ftp://ftp.mirrorservice.org/sites/64studio.com/apt/ 64studio main

Even after i upgraded, am i right?

I tried to find a repository list section on the website but couldn't find it. Thanx for your help.

Yes, mirrors will give you better service

Hi youki - Using a mirror for the stable branch will speed up your downloads of packages considerably. It also helps reduce the load on our main server.

upgrading after running testing for months?

if I change the only repo to deb http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/64studio.com/apt/ 64studio main away from where I have been keeping:
http://apt.64studio.com/64studio/testing/ I only see four upgrades, all CUPS packages.

If I change it back to testing, I see upgradable Ardour as well (installed = 1:2.4.1-1 Latest ver=1:2.4.1-2)

my uname -a output is:
Linux 64studio 2.6.21-1-multimedia-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Fri Jun 22 00:00:33 UTC 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Have my Testing upgrades kept me mostly current through the new version? It appears to be so. I always covet new versons of Ardour, so I will install (about 4 hours on dialup, but it can be doing it while I'm sleeping)

Linux-Kernel-header-2.6.18-7

Hi - I have done a fresh 64studio 2.0-64bit installation on my amd-3800+/MSI K8N. All works fine. (kernel-multimedia-2.6.21.1 installed)
But I need newer kernel-headers, because the linux-kernel-headers has the version 2.6.18-7 and if I compile the driver for my importend virtualbox, the vbox ask me for the right kernel-headers, but there are no kernel-headers version 2.6.21-1 found.

So, where can I find the equal kernel-headers, or a newer version as kernel-multimedia-2.6.21.1 with the correct headers?

KDE

Note that if you have changed from the default GNOME to KDE, you need to reinstall KDE separately after the upgrade. On login to 2.1, you will get the taskbar and a completely blank desktop. You need to open Synaptic and reinstall the metapackage "kde".
